| Tara's RioMania VIII preview | Posted on Thursday, March 25 @ 22:18:11 PDT
As I sit down to write this preview, the full impact of what this night means to TWF is flooding over me. This is the EIGHTH Rio Mania; an event many speculated would never be repeated after the first iteration. It is our fifth Rio Mania at the Colonial, a building it was said we would never work in. we have survived and thrived and now we are face to face with potentially the biggest show in TWF history. 300 people came out last year for the spectacle that is Rio Mania and this year’s card has enough to pack the place to the rafters.
For the first time ever, a TWF Women’s match will be contested with a stipulation. That match will be a violent Kendo Stick on a Pole affair. This is only the third time women have appeared on Rio Mania and only the second time one-on-one. One competitor has been in both of those other matches and won them. Crystal, much to my chagrin at Mania VI, is the undisputed Queen of Rio Mania. She pinned The Jake two years ago and “Downtown” Whitley Brown last year. However, she comes from a hardcore averse faction (In fact, she is the only member of her faction scheduled with a stipulation and there are only two matches that don’t have one) and is facing down Mz. Chievous, a woman with an h-core reputation on the circuit. Their matches have been back and forth contests largely confined to the mat so a brawl will be a very different environment from their previous encounters and one that Crystal will be considerably less experienced in. Mz. Chievous has the experience edge all over Crystal in terms of both general ring time and level of violence. There is of course the outside interference factor, as Famous INK is certain to stick their noses in until there is a chance they may be bloodied. The recent falling out between Crystal and Ashton calls into doubt the reliability of the help even further. For her match last month with Mz. Chievous and Orange Tang, only her brother INK stood up with her and he was her partner. I certainly don’t wish to speculate about someone’s personal life, but one must figure that the emotional strain may well affect her mindset leading up to and during her match. That could be the most dangerous of all though; if Crystal comes to the conclusion that Ashton has been using and manipulating her and decides that she needs to prove herself I would not want to be Mz. Chievous in that scenario. All the veteran experience and hardcore beatings in the world cannot top a woman scorned.
Speaking of hardcore beatings, (A common topic in TWF) the most shocking in recent memory had to be Matt Justice leaving Scorpion battered and bloodied in the middle of the ring at the end of last month’s show. Talk about not seeing something coming, but maybe we should have. Matt Justice has been spinning his wheels while also showing a certain level of dedication by outlasting most of his fellow Mercenaries. (No one said a mercenary couldn’t be dedicated, just not loyal without payment) He has proven before that he can take a beating as well as anyone that TWF has picked up since Ron Rufio and he is managed by the same man, Alex Morrow. Justice is very smart here. He has nothing to lose. By targeting a top dog like Scorpion and challenging him to a match he makes his presence felt by the audience and the brass. He probably wasn’t counting on Scorpion taking him up on it and making it a Tai-Pei Deathmatch, only the second in TWF history. The first was the main event of the first show at the Colonial Theater, Dead by Dawn ’06. Interestingly, Scorpion actually lost that match to Anthrax, but was given a re-match when a tape review showed his foot was under the rope for the pinfall. Being perfectly honest, Matt Justice doesn’t have much of a chance, but it doesn’t matter because as long as he can hang with Scorpion he will be able to prove himself and win the most important thing of all, respect. He is following the path blazed by Michael Nothing and Raz the Whip and followed through by Rufio and Carnie Craig. It is a path that others no one remembers also attempted and ended in injury. It is risky, but if it pays off we may have a new star on our hands.
In what will likely be the technical classic of the night, The Mega Whoresmen Michael Nothing and “Big Shot” Cabeebo put their TWF Tag Team titles up against Ashton and INK. Sadly I missed the last Woodland show and missed the Six-man main event, but I heard rave reviews from those who were there about the incredible technicality shown by all the competitors. If there were one, INK would be my pick for “Most Improved” at the Col. Lynch awards. His rise has been exceptional and he has picked a great time for his first peaking to correspond with a Tag title shot at the biggest show of the year. The other youngster in the match is on his second Rio Mania; Cabeebo survived a 3-man Tack Strip match with Carnie Craig and Steel Johnson last year. He knows what it is like to face that crowd, but it was then that he began drinking to deal with the pressure of performing. A resurgence of Cabeebo’s “personal demons” could cost him dearly. Ashton is bitter at losing the World Title before being able to go into Rio Mania as the sitting champion. He is determined to get gold back around his waist immediately. He is teaming with INK who is the best pure tag wrestler in F.I. Together; they are as formidable as any team in the promotion, Michael Nothing has been turning in one spectacular performance after another with Cabeebo in his corner. The two of them together are not just one of the best IN the promotion, they are one of the best in TWF history at this point, if just for their Desire video and nothing else. (I kid, but truly that video is one of the greatest vignettes I have seen anywhere) This match will show just how far TWFers have come technically without losing the TWF spirit.
Jealousy, the green-eyed monster of vices, has forever plagued Raz the Whip. The “junior” member of Business 80, who was always kept in the background, developed a mean streak that has never really been touched in the annals of TWF to compensate for a tendency to get lost in the shuffle. The last time that mean streak got stirred up, I nearly died on more than one occasion and Raz reigned as TWF champion. Now Raz feels that Ron Rufio has supplanted him in the pecking order, both in TWF and in the Heavy Hitters, and that jealous side has again birthed a cold-blooded monster that will stoop to any lengths to get what he wants. He even teamed up with his despised former B-80 partner Joey Balls last month to get revenge on his former Heavy Hitting cohorts. He will be stepping into Rufio’s yard though when they face off in a Samoan Chain match. Rufio is not infallible in this his personal stip. He lost to Ashton at Rio Mania V, but redeemed himself the next year by beating CJ Profit. Raz’ Rio Mania record isn’t the strongest. He missed last year’s event and Rio Mania III and his only win is over Colombian Firecracker at Mania V. The Samoan Chain match is unique in its brutality as the chain is both a weapon and a restraint to be worked around and to keep ones opponent at bay. Raz has never faced this environment before, but few people have been in more crazy matches than Raz and his adaptability is his greatest strength as an athlete. I anticipate we will see new levels of savagery and new forms of pain when The Hyphy Kid meets up with The Whip.
There has been one boxing match before at Rio Mania. Six years ago Dick Pierceall knocked out Alex Morrow in the second round for his first victory. (Dick would later go on to be a multi-titliest under less than honorable circumstances, but in 2004 Dickie P was still on the good side) The ring will be rocked by Vortex’ return to competition against his reviled fellow Co-Commissioner Johnnie “Balla Ball” Williams. I’m not sure what to say about this one, other than bring on the popcorn and save me a seat in the front row. One year ago I had the honor of announcing Vortex as our new Commissioner. On Mar. 27 I get the honor of seeing the man that screwed me out of my job get the beating he has LONG deserved.
With the majority of his title defenses happening out of town, CJ Profit’s impressive Television Title run has been somewhat overshadowed by his attempts to gain other titles to go with it. At Dead by Dawn CJ reminded all of us, including his opponents Rob Banks and Jacc Movez, who the champ is and why. He willingly put his title belt up against both men after Jacc tried to rig last month’s #1 contender match. (Rumors of where Banks was stranded and why are unconfirmed but strongly implicate his former partner made sure he was unable to make it for the match) CJ is hungry to prove he is no afterthought amongst the major players of TWF. He all but had the Heavyweight title won last month when Ashton blew a head gasket and demanded he throw in the towel. CJ did it, but the interpersonal relations of F.I. appear to be falling apart rapidly as massive egos clash. Still, CJ is in the catbird’s seat here since his rivals are former friends who will largely be focused on their own bad blood, allowing CJ to sit back and pick his spots. I wouldn’t underestimate either of the A-Team though. They came up facing some of the finest talent TWF has and availed themselves as well as any rookies in half a decade. Jacc and Rob have both pinned Grand-Slam champions in the past. Rob Banks in particular has long appeared to have Famous INK’s number. He has beaten Ashton more times in the last 2 years than anyone other than Anthrax. Conversely, Jacc Movez has struggled in the ring against F.I. especially with CJ himself. Jacc though was the one that beat out the others for Rookie of the Year. Remarkably, I do not believe CJ Profit and Rob Banks have had a singles match. This gives a slight edge to Rob Banks since neither of his opponents is familiar with him as a singles wrestler. The Class of 2007 is sure to bring down the house in an attempt to prove which of them is the superior talent and to get that TV title, often the first step to Heavyweight gold and TWF immortality.
Three words describe the most popular match in TWF, a stipulation that has won the last two Matches of the Year, Tables, Ladders and Chairs. The four men involved in TLC at Rio Mania were all in the 2008 MOTY winner, although on different sides than they now are. At that time, Steel Johnson was with Bad Company and teamed with the Million-Dollar Militia’s Ekstazy and Joey Balls against the team of the Heavy Hitters. How much a year and some change will make on a young star. Steel finally got fed up with the constant string of abuse flowing out his teammates and he did something about it; he joined the Heavy Hitters and formed a tag team with his former rival Carnie Craig. The old saw that the best opponents make the best teams is in full effect. Craig and Steel know each other like a book and each knows how the other is thinking inside the squared circle. Will that be enough to top one of the most successful (If oddly underrated) teams in TWF? Ekstazy and Joey Balls haven’t lost a step since their run as Tag Team Champions in 2008. Joey Balls has been in almost every TLC match the promotion has ever had, including the very first where he was put through three tables yet still scored the winning pinfall. Ekstazy has been in several TLC’s of his own; he and Scorpion entered the main event at Rio Mania V holding the titles and very nearly managed to hold onto them. Ekstazy also has more general Ladder match experience than either of his opponents has and is the best suited to make use of the ladders as a launch pad for his exciting offense. On a sheer veteran level, I would give the nod to the MDM winning this one. But I have learned never to count Carnie Craig out in any situation and with Steel Johnson’s strong improvement over the last couple of years a Heavy Hitters victory is not out of the question.
For the fifth year in a row, Anthrax will be in the main event at Rio Mania. This year he will be forced to face down his former best friend and mentor, a man he never thought would betray him. That man is The Jake and he is out to prove that he is still the top dog in TWF by going for his sixth Heavyweight title and his first since losing the belt to Murph at Rio Mania II. The Jake had taken a step back from the title picture for years in an attempt to help “make” new talent, but Anthrax’s well-intended goading (Which was meant to motivate Jake back to the main event) has backfired on him. Now Jake has re-discovered the asshole within and NO ONE in TWF is safe. He is willing to put up his signature long hair against the near seven-year career of Anthrax. The Jake is quite literally the most devious and psychologically crafty person to ever set foot in our ring and his six years of facing up to the nastiest people and tactics has only served to teach him new tricks. The obvious arguments still apply though. Anthrax is a good 6 years younger than Jake, is in better shape and has more experience on top since TWF left the backyard and rented warehouses for the Colonial. Anthrax has been in EVERY Rio Mania main event at the Colonial. The Jake’s only Rio Mania main was that loss to Murph at the old Nor-Cal Inc. building. His veteran advantage is minimal over ‘Thrax. This will be the first ever matchup between these two icons and I am hotly anticipating the face to face encounter after a war of words that has gone on for nearly a year. The “old man” and the “spot monkey” will give us a Rio Mania main for the ages.
It is the biggest night of the year. The night we dream about. From cheering on a brand new champion at the first through actually wrestling a match at Rio Mania VI, the history of this night is personal for me and it was personal before I was really a part of the roster. I suspect some of our long-term fans have similar feelings of “I was there when...” I would like to encourage all fans of TWF to come out to the Colonial Theater to see Rio Mania live. Join us on Saturday night and be a part of the history.
Until next time,
Tara |
