| Tara's Dead By Dawn Preview | Posted on Thursday, February 18 @ 22:25:42 PST
TWF celebrates its fourth anniversary in the Colonial Theater this Saturday night, with the second to last stop (and final one in Sacramento) on the road to Rio Mania. Dead by Dawn fills a very important, but oft overlooked step in the yearly story of TWF. As the final show (but one) before Rio Mania this is where the card for the biggest show is set. Excitement and anticipation will be a part of the air we all will be breathing, whether we are in the audience or backstage.
Last month Crystal was finally able to get a win on Mz. Chievous with a vicious spear. Now the match rumored to be happening last month is set for this show. Mz. Chievous will team with fan favorite (and quite unfavorite of Crystal’s) Orange Tang against Crystal and a mystery partner. Speculation is high about Crystal’s ability to find a partner outside of her own faction, given that all three of them are in the main event. However, there are a group of hired guns available of whom none have a match at this point. If the price is right, I can easily see a Mercenary backing up the infamous mouth of Famous INK. Crystal has made use of Alex Morrow’s services in the past in similar situations and given Alex’s past affiliation with Ashton it is a likely assumption. Crystal has considerable intergender match experience, enough to at least partially offset Mz. Chievous’ general veteran advantage. Nothing sets Crystal off-balance more though than a run-in with the twisted deviant figure of Orange Tang. This match is sure to deliver on the comic hijnks TWF is known for.
Our Co-Commissioners each have a #1 contender for the Television title at Rio Mania by merit of wins in Battle Royal. Those contenders are none other than former A- Team teammates, Jacc Movez and Rob Banks. After their ugly break-up in December when they failed to regain the Tag Team titles, the two have gone their separate ways. Jacc has decidedly taken the low road, aligning himself with Johnnie Williams. His win in the Battle Royal last month was arguably the biggest singles win of his career. Banks, conversely, didn’t have nearly as great a night; being pinned by a mad-as-hell and out to again prove himself The Jake. It was a valiant effort by the young star, but he was outgunned not only by Jake, but also by the more experienced Raz the Whip and Ron Rufio. It is nearly impossible to predict the outcome of match between two men that were as close as brothers are and have never faced each other one on one. The largest variable is their cousin Whitley and whose side she chooses to take. Jacc has been rather abusive of the young woman in recent appearances, literally dragging her to ringside with him. The break-up of a team meets the determination to gain gold and I cannot think of a more potentially combustible situation.
The Heavy Hitters are facing two very dangerous rivals; former member Raz the Whip who is determined to make Ron Rufio pay for supplanting him, and The Million-Dollar Militia who have taken a SEVERE dislike to the Venture Brothers of Carnie Craig and Steel Johnson. At DBD, Raz will team with his former Business 80 cohort Joey Balls and his partner Ekstazy for a wild six-man match against the three remaining Heavy Hitters. Balls and Ekstazy hadn’t teamed together in some time prior to last month, but proved they hadn’t lost a step as they double –team Gorilla Press/Joe KO’ed Steel into the mat for the win. Despite their acrimonious split after Business 80 lost control of the company almost 3 1/2 years ago, I can’t imagine Balls isn’t riding high on the catbird’s seat at the thought of going in with not one but TWO former championship tag partners. Conversely, even with having the great Vortex as a mentor, none of the H.H. has ever won Tag Team gold. They are at an enormous disadvantage going against such strong tag competitors. What will pull the Heavy Hitters through is their superior heart and guts, two things none of their opponents possess. There are no two men more likely to RUN from a fight than Balls and Ekstazy while Raz is fond of hiding behind the efforts of others to cover his own selfish skin. Rufio has defeated Balls more than once, as did Steel a few months ago. Craig and Ron have regularly pushed Ekstazy to the limits of his abilities and the two of them together could easily confound the arrogant superstar. Steel has beaten Raz more than once in his long TWF career and all three Hitters will be well prepared for the type of hardcore beating that Raz specializes in. This is certain to be one of the most violent non-stipulation matches in some time.
In my humble opinion, there was never a greater match held in an actual backyard than The Jake vs. Scorpion from March of 2005. (See Very Enjoyable Matches Vol. 2) It was on that day Scorpion truly arrived as a TWF superstar, his dominant win over Jake earning him his first Heavyweight title shot and paving the way for him to win that belt one year later. Scorpion repeated the performance, scoring another win on Jake at the first Head on Collision later that year. They met up in the ring back in June for the first time in nearly four years and again Scorpion got the win, but it was tainted by Johnnie Williams throwing The Jake out of the match just as he was about to make Steel tap out. Instead, Scorpion would pin Steel a few minutes later. One can speculate about whether Scorpion would have let Jake get the win anyway, but the question still remains. Even with both of them as “fan favorites” there was a special intensity and electricity when they locked up that didn’t drop off until several minutes after Johnnie’s interference. Now the dynamic has completely changed from any of their previous matchups, with Jake having turned his back on the audience and Scorpion having embraced them. It has been almost five years since their first thrilling brawl and almost that long since they have gone one on one. I am as eagerly awaiting this match as any in a long time.
Finally, our brand new TWF Heavyweight Champion Anthrax will defend the belt in a gauntlet with all three members of Famous INK. I am pretty certain that this is an attempt on Johnnie’s part to wear the champ down, allowing Ashton to regain the title and Johnnie to once again have someone beholden to him on top. INK will be first up in this grueling gauntlet. It will be his first ever TWF Title match, no small event in a wrestler’s career. Several months back Anthrax and INK went one on one and INK availed himself very well, matching the veteran technician with mat skills of his own. INK may well be one of the best defensive wrestlers we have right now and it plays neatly into the overall Famous INK plan of attack. I am not completely writing off INK’s chances, almost anything can happen in TWF, but INK’s job isn’t to win the belt so much as grease the wheels for Ashton. The same goes for CJ Profit, the difference being that if CJ sees a chance to make himself champion, he will go for it. CJ has greatly improved his game on all counts, especially since winning the Television title. After months of mixing it up with Carnie Craig his brawling has become second to none. He was always as strongest on the mat of all the TWF academy graduates as well. Is it enough to defeat the man many consider to be the greatest active wrestler in TWF history? Most likely not, but again it makes things that much easier for the former champ. By the time Ashton steps into the ring, he is hoping that two long and dehabilitating matches will have worn down Anthrax sufficiently to allow him to pin his rival and regain the belt. Last month’s Ladder match was one of the greatest matches in TWF history and Ashton won his way into the books despite the loss. On Saturday he will be looking to get another chapter dedicated to him and to see history again repeated; Anthrax’s last Heavyweight title run lasted only a single month. When the final bell rings and the bodies are counted, Famous INK is hoping that, at least in the case of Anthrax’s career, Dead by Dawn is more than just a show name.
Until next time,
Tara
